Hot weather: How to stay safe in the sun

Older walkers enjoying the sun

10 July 2025

Whilst we welcome the sunny Scottish weather with open arms, soaring temperatures and heatwaves can put older people at risk.

If you need help cooling down - don't sweat! We have compiled some top tips to keep you sun-safe.

  • It's best to avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day (11-3pm), but sometimes that can't be avoided.
  • When out in direct sunlight remember to always wear (and regularly re-apply) high factor sunscreen.
  • Cover your head with a sunhat for added sun protection.
  • Take regular breaks indoors or in a shady area to avoid getting heat exhaustion or heatstroke and avoid exercising at the hottest times of day.
  •  Dress for the weather - Make sure you wear light, breathable clothing and wear a sunhat for added sun protection. Wear lighter colours as dark colours absorb more light energy from the sun, meaning they will also absorb more heat.
  • Keep windows and curtains closed - heatwaves allow hot air from the outside to enter your home, increasing the indoor temperature. Use a fan and a damp cloth to stay extra cool.
  • Stay hydrated. In hot weather, it's important to avoid caffeine and make sure you're drinking lots of water. In the heat, you should avoid drinks containing caffeine, including tea and coffee, it's typically best to stick to water. As you sweat throughout the day, the liquids you are losing need to be replaced to avoid dehydration.
  • Eat cooling foods that hydrate you like jelly, icepops, watermelon and cucumber.
  • Keep an eye out on vulnerable people in your community, like older people. Check if they need help with shopping or any chores.
