Many older people and their carers do not know about the benefits they are entitled to, which means that many struggle financially and suffer in silence. A few months ago, John called our helpline to seek advice and reassurance. John's ability to work was impacted by his worsening health problems, which meant that he found himself worrying about the days ahead. Our team of experts were able to identify substantial financial help available to him. 

"When I called the helpline, I was so stressed about my ability to afford the essentials like food and heating my home. The helpline team reassured me that there is financial support that I'm entitled to - I had no idea that this existed before calling. Talking things through has definitely improved my mental health." 

Ann contacted the Age Scotland helpline while experiencing loneliness and isolation after the passing of her husband. Our helpline advisers referred Ann to our friendship service, and informed her that she could sign up to recieve weekly calls from a friendship volunteer. 

"I've lived alone since my husband passed away 6 months ago, and it's been terribly lonely. I remember the first time I called, when I was feeling very low. The volunteer spent a long time chatting and laughing with me. I felt wonderful afterwards, and this made me feel brighter for the whole week." 

David called the helpline as he was facing rising energy costs, and was concerned that he would not be able to heat his home properly. He was also worried about the impact that this could have on his health. Our helpline team provided information about financial support which could help with energy costs, and were also able to refer him to one of our free online workshops on energy efficiency and insulation. 

"I was initially a bit nervous about calling because I was feeling so overwhelmed. The person who called me was so patient, and took the time to run through my options with me. Knowing that there is help out there is such a relief." 

Jean called our helpline seeking legal advice about Power of Attorney. After experiencing a long period of illness, Jean became worried about what would happen if she became unable to make or communicate her own decisions. She decided that she wanted to set up a lasting power of attorney, but was worried about legal costs and the paperwork involved. Our team was able to refer her to Solicitors for Older People Scotland, and reasurred her that there is support available through Legal Aid. 

"I wanted to set up a lasting power of attorney, but I just had no clue where to start. Thinking about all the paperwork and legal fees was overwhelming. I felt much better after calling the helpline. I didn't even know that Legal Aid was available until I spoke on the phone. The future seems a lot less uncertain now."
