Care Home Checklist

What to look for in a care home

Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions you can make. It is important to be sure that your new home will offer all the things you need to live a life you will be happy with. Finding out as much as you can about a care home will help you to make an informed choice.

Everyone has different ideas about what they want from where they live. The questions on this checklist provide the opportunity to think about the things that matter to you most.

You may find it useful to go through the list and think about which things you want to prioritise. You can then use the list when visiting care homes as a prompt to ask the questions relevant to you.

Making a considered decision

When thinking about what you’d like from a care home, keep in mind that your new home will be just that: a home. It should be a place where you can enjoy spending time and feel comfortable welcoming visitors. A care home should also be a place where you can make new friends.

Remember you can ask the care home about anything you are unsure of and take time to consider your options. There is no need to decide on the day, and you can visit a number of different care homes before deciding.
