Unpaid carers lead the way in Age Scotland’s new dementia guide

unpaid carers guide launch

6 June 2025

Age Scotland has launched a new dementia information guide for unpaid carers - created by people with lived experience of caring for someone living with dementia.

“Unpaid Carers of People Living with Dementia: Know Your Rights” was unveiled at a national Age Scotland dementia event, which brought together carers, people living with dementia and professionals to connect, collaborate and inspire change.

It was developed with members of the Dementia Lived Experience Forum and the Unpaid Carers Working Group, ensuring that the voices of unpaid carers directly informed the content, tone and structure of the guide. The publication marks the charity’s continued work to place lived experience at the heart of its dementia support and information services.

The guide is designed to help unpaid carers understand their legal rights and access key support. From navigating social care to understanding carer assessments and financial entitlements, the resource offers accessible information shaped by real-life experience.

Anna Clements, Head of Dementia at Age Scotland, said:

“This guide is a milestone for Age Scotland. It’s the first time we’ve developed an information guide that’s been shaped directly by the carers who need it most.

“We are building on a strong foundation of community-led activity and advocacy, and this guide reflects that commitment. I’m excited about what comes next, and proud to be working with such an engaged and passionate group of people and partners.”

Myra Lamont, member of the Unpaid Carers Working Group, said:

“When caring for someone with dementia, it is so important to know your rights for yourself as the carer and also for the person you care for.

“This resource was developed by carers for carers who have a wealth of knowledge and experiences of a wide range of dementia symptoms.

“It is our hope that the resource will be wide reaching to support carers with the knowledge and information they need in any caring situation and especially post diagnostic support”

This launch is part of Age Scotland’s wider work to embed inclusive, experience-led perspectives across its dementia programme - from policy and campaigns to training, community grants and peer support.

The guide is now available to download or order in print for free on Age Scotland’s website.

The charity is currently welcoming new members to its Dementia Lived Experience Forum, which helps shape national dementia policy and support. Those living with dementia or unpaid carers are encouraged to apply at: www.age.scot/DementiaForum
