Highly Commended - Feniks Active 50+

Members of Feniks Active 50+ group receiving their Highly Commended certificate from Age Scotland's chief executive Katherine Crawford

Age Scotland has presented Feniks' Active 50+ group with highly commended recognition for its exceptional work supporting older migrants and helping people stay connected, active and engaged in their communities.

Active 50+, part of Feniks, was set up 10 years ago in response to a lack of welcoming and inclusive spaces where people facing language and cultural barriers could connect with others and spend their time meaningfully. They bring together older people from Central and Eastern European communities creating opportunities for social connection, wellbeing, and active participation in community life.

The group has also worked to support older carers, people with mobility difficulties and those affected by dementia. More recently, it has helped older Ukrainians displaced by war to settle into their communities and build new support networks.

Katherine Crawford, Chief Executive of Age Scotland, said:

"Feniks' Active 50+ group provides much more than activities. It creates a sense of belonging, friendship and support for older people who may otherwise face isolation, language barriers or difficulties accessing services. Their commitment to inclusion, cultural understanding and supporting people through life's challenges makes them a truly deserving recipient of this recognition."

Aleksandra Szczygielska, Feniks’ Community Development Worker, said:

“This recognition means a great deal to everyone at Feniks. It reflects many years of listening and responding to the changing needs of our community, supporting people through challenges, crises, and periods of transition. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, whose dedication, time and compassion make these activities possible. I would also like to thank our partners, who recognise the value of our community, understand its needs, and continue to support our work.

“For many of our participants, these activities are about much more than simply having something to do. They are a source of friendship, belonging and connection. For some, this is the only community where they truly feel accepted and supported. One of our volunteers recently told us how grateful he was that these activities exist because he knows that some people would rarely, if ever, leave their homes without them. That simple observation captures the impact of our work perfectly.

“We are not just delivering activities. We are helping older Polish and Ukrainian people build friendships, regain confidence, improve their well-being, and remain connected to their community. That is something we are incredibly proud of and motivated to continue.”

Through their strong volunteer leadership and a strong commitment to helping older people feel valued and connected, Feniks’ Active 50+ plays an important role in improving wellbeing and reducing isolation.
