Highly Commended - Monday Club
Monday Club in Stornoway has been highly commended by Age Scotland for its dedicated support of people affected by stroke and other long-term health conditions across the Western Isles.
Run entirely by volunteers, the club has been bringing people together for more than 25 years, providing friendship, companionship and support to members and their families.
The group offers a varied programme of activities, outings and social events, helping older people remain active, connected and involved in community life. It also provides valuable support and respite for carers and a welcoming environment where people can share experiences and build friendships with others who understand the challenges they face.
For many members, the club has become a lifeline following life-changing illness, helping them regain confidence, maintain social connections and enjoy new experiences.
Katherine Crawford, Chief Executive of Age Scotland, said:
"Monday Club provides a warm and welcoming community for people whose lives have been affected by stroke and other long-term health conditions. Through friendship, mutual support and shared experiences, they help people regain confidence, build lasting connections and continue enjoying life within their community. The difference this volunteer-led group makes to members and their families is truly inspiring."
Alison Tunstall from Monday Club said:
“Running Monday Club is such a privilege for me and is a truly life changing experience.
I have learnt so many positive life lessons from the group over the last 13 years. It is a group of people who are seen, appreciated, respected and part of the community not old, disabled, unwell or unseen. It is one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done. The changes over time in some group members are remarkable from their communication, increased confidence and willingness to socialise.
“We have varied activities to include Ten Pin Bowling, pamper days, visits to historical sites, seated yoga, visits to meet Alpacas, Afternoon Teas and far too many lunches and parties to count. Our activities and outings have such a positive impact on the group, it is a pleasure to witness people do somethings for the first time and the joy that it brings them and that they want to do them again.
“All group members past and present should be really proud of this award. Our much-loved departed group members left a legacy that we build on every day. We are all absolutely delighted to have been recognised with this award. Not too shabby for a little group in Stornoway’!”
Through care, compassion and an unwavering commitment to inclusion, Monday Club makes a lasting difference to people across the Western Isles, helping ensure that no one faces the challenges of illness or disability alone.
