Member Group of the Year 2026 - Strachur Hub
Strachur Hub, on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne in Argyll and Bute, has been named Age Scotland's Member Group of the Year in recognition of its outstanding support for older people and its role in tackling loneliness and isolation.
The vital community hub in rural Argyll, was established in 2016 to help older people improve their physical and mental wellbeing, stay active and remain connected to their community. Since then, it has grown into a trusted community space where people come together for friendship, exercise, support and companionship.
On average, 48 older people attend each week with many members travelling considerable distances to take part in the wide range of activities on offer. Around two-thirds of the Hub’s members live alone. For some, the Hub provides their only regular opportunity to get out, socialise and connect with others. To help overcome the irregular and infrequent public transport, the group successfully fundraised for a minibus and works in partnership with a local transport provider to ensure older people from across the area can attend.
The Strachur Hub offers a wide range of activities, including exercise sessions, singing, Boccia and social gatherings, while also providing practical and emotional support to members experiencing illness, bereavement or difficult circumstances. Their inclusive approach has helped create a welcoming environment where people feel valued, supported and part of their community.
Katherine Crawford, Chief Executive of Age Scotland, said:
Strachur Hub is an outstanding example of the difference a community can make when older people are placed at the heart of local life. For many of its members, the Hub is far more than a weekly activity programme. It is a source of friendship, support, belonging and practical help that enables people to stay connected, active and independent, even across a large rural area. The dedication of its volunteers and the profound impact it has on the lives of older people made Strachur Hub a truly deserving winner of this year's award.
Members regularly describe the Hub as a "lifeline", highlighting the friendships, support and sense of safety it provides:
